April 30th was the first day for student teams to present their business plans/innovative technologies to the panel of judges.

One of the three rooms where students presented located in stunning Annenberg Center for Information Science and Technology:

Six winning teams (out of about thirty competing teams) were announced during reception on the first day of the competition in front of the beautiful Annenberg Center for Information Science and Technology.

Team from Stanford University was the ultimate winner of the competition with amazing new technology: energy extraction from nitrogen polluting the environment.

Much anticipated Department of Energy green energy business competition finals at CalTech: keynote by Resnick Institute Director Harry Atwater.

Dane A. Boysen of Arpa-e Energy made a great presentation about how him and his team started out with the fuel cell technology business and the challenges they had to face. He illustrated his story with brilliant slides:

The audience loved the slides – smart, funny and touches the heart. Thank you so much, Mr. Boysen of Arpa-e!

Department of Energy representatives were simply awesome and everybody loved them. Many thanks, DOE! Great work, FLoW Team!

PyCon 2012 closing speech and Humanoid Robot Nao raffle, the grand prize of all prizes! Robot Nao speaks 20 languages, has excellent environment recognition and it is programmed in Python. Here it is, strapped to Jesse Noller’s chest.

Linux Chix LA:

Linux Chix LA had adorable penguins at their booth. The penguins had feet and could be walked on a ‘leash’ by children or adults. Penguins were a big hit with adults and children alike.

Another penguin brought by Linux Chix LA: a penguin speaker that flops its wings to the music. Try listening to Beethoven with little wings flopping – very entertaining.

Unity3D sent their people to present new features of next Unity3D software release. We had cap of 30 people due to limited conference room space, otherwise we would love to invite more Unity3D users in Los Angeles area.

PyLadies 501(c)(3) is an educational non-profit dedicated to programming in Python.

Judging in Process – there were so many amazing student games that it was really hard not to give prizes to every student team. The game that captured the hearts of all judges was ‘Safari Rescue’. It was unforgettable how the animals that did not get rescued in the end of the game cried! The style of the winning game was an old arcade look. The game presented a stimulating challenge to the judges and also a great concept, developed by a group of 8 students.
Many thanks to Chris Osland from USC who was one of the organizers and his team members for their tireless work around the clock to make it one of the best student competitions of the year.
